Rayer’s return to Bedwas ends on real high
Blues director of rugby Mike Rayer was pleased his side’s trip into the unknown resulted in a win as they defeated Bedwas 48-23 on Saturday, writes Michael Hann.
Bedford had never faced their welsh opposition before Saturday’s encounter, but it didn’t effect them as they were in control throughout the match.
On his team’s performance Rayer said: “We were very good in patches.
“In particular the try just before half time was top drawer. To go through all those phases from 90-yards in these heavy conditions was pretty special.
“We wavered a bit and to their credit I thought Bedwas scored three very good tries.
“But we have done well. We’ve come away from home to a different place, a different environment and a sticky little pitch but the lads stuck to the task well.”
Bedford scored three tries from rolling mauls and Rayer was delighted with the impact his forwards had during the game.
“The forwards chimed in with a few tries which is always good to see,” he said.
“It is something the lads have been working hard on and it is good to see the end product.
“It is still a work in progress, we are not quite there yet but it shows that we are able to do that.”
Injuries meant that Rayer had to make eight changes to his side that faced Plymouth the previous weekend.
However that had no effect on the Blues as they raced in eight tries on their way to victory.
“It is great everybody is contributing and that everyone has some rugby under their belt,” he continued.
“Mark Kohler came in and I thought he had a terrific game today.
“It is another win and we look forward to next week to Stirling and Ladies Day.”
The Blues director of rugby was also thrilled to return to the club he used to watch as a nine-year-old boy.
“It is a smashing rugby club and they play a good brand of rugby and its no surprise where they are in their league,” he added.
“It is good to be back and we will give them a warm welcome when they come to our place.”
