Bedford Blues director of rugby Mike Rayer was left disappointed with his side’s performance despite coming from behind to beat Nottingham in a thrilling encounter at Goldington Road on Saturday, writes Michael Hann.

The Blues were behind throughout the match against the Green and Whites, but a Ben Ransom try in the dying seconds gave them their third win of the season.

Speaking after the game Rayer said: “We are disappointed with some of our basic skills today and we left a few tries out there.

“We made basic errors and Nottingham punished us – they looked a good side today.

“They defended well but because we weren’t recycling the ball quickly and weren’t efficient enough we couldn’t get in behind them and we had to dig deep.”

The Blues struggled in the first half of the game and were behind 22-3 at half time, but Rayer says it isn’t always easy in the opening period. “Everyone is fresh at the start of the game, it takes time to break sides down,” he said.

“You can’t just go out and turn a tap on and suddenly score a try, it doesn’t happen like that. You have got to break sides down and you have to work hard.”

In spite of the performance there were still some positives Rayer could take out of the game.

“We are really pleased with the win because we had to dig deep there,” he continued.

“The character again has come through and that is absolutely fantastic for us.

“Obviously you have to look at the first half, but I think the overriding thing is that we will take the win at this stage.”

Rayer was also encouraged with his side’s scrum and in particular the work of Paul Tupai.

He said: “I thought we scrummed particularly well which was great and that got us a bit of field position and territory.

“Toops was incredible. He summed up why we won that game because of his effort.

“He was magnificent amongst the pack and was a great example.”

And he added: “I tell you what you can’t fault - value for money when you come here!”

He’s not wrong!
