New signing wants to out-Fox the opposition
MBTC-11-02-12-Bedford Blues v Plymouth Albion. Goldington Rd, Bedford.
NEW signing Darren Fox is relishing the challenge of pushing Bedford towards promotion after their 29-17 win over Plymouth Albion on Saturday, writes James Heneghan.
Four tries gave Bedford the bonus-point victory on Fox’s debut and the former Cambridge man is determined to kick on.
He said: “It was great to get out there. Obviously after it got called off last week I was pretty gutted and I didn’t think it would be on this week but the groundsmen have done a cracking job.
“I really enjoyed it. I’ve got a few mates here who I have played with in the past so it was good. I thought we played pretty well.
“We’re a bit disappointed with switching off and conceding a couple of tries but it was good and I really enjoyed it. Hopefully I can come here and add to the squad a little bit and push on from there.
“This is what I needed. Since I left Northampton, I’ve had a few unanswered questions about my rugby and I think it was the right time to come here.”
Fox, 31, joined the Blues from financially-stricken Cambridge at the end of January after an injury to Sacha Harding.
He continued: “It’s a cracking opportunity for me to push on and try to finish my rugby career on a better note and coming to Bedford will give me an opportunity to do that. We’ve got some really good players here and it’s a good squad and we’ve still got Sacha Harding and others to come back.
“I’ll do what I do and see what happens and try to help the club out as much as I can.”
The Blues produced a solid performance to defeat Plymouth and briefly moved back up to second in the Championship.
But Cornish Pirates regained second spot with a 19-14 win at Rotherham Titans on Monday afternoon, with two games of the regular season remaining.
Fox now wants to see Bedford push on, adding: “I thought we played pretty well. We were disappointed to let in two tries but we looked after the ball well and attacked the right areas. If we had a bit more composure we could have had a few more getting the five points which is what we wanted.
“We’ve got two tough games left and we need to get some momentum before having a crack at the play-offs.”
