Loughborough 15 Bedford Athletic 41

Bedford Athletic made it 11 wins from their last 13 matches with a comfortable 41-15 victory at Loughborough in Midlands One East on Saturday.

With their hosts in the bottom three, Ath ran in seven tries to secure victory.

Bedford were clinically efficient throughout and took the lead on six minutes when Will Allard and Ben Johnson combined well for Allard to power over the line.

The dominance of the visiting forwards was marked again on 19 minutes as Chris Elliott broke through and Ben Beagent was on hand to touch down.

James Mortimer converted this second try, a kick that took him to 300 points for the first XV.

Not to be outdone the pacy visiting backs soon got in on the act with Johnson finishing off a move in the corner and an undaunted Mortimer converted.

Loughborough did get on the scoreboard before half time with their fly-half kicking a penalty goal as Ath led 19-3 at the break.

Ath continued their good form in the second half with Mortimer pulling the strings at fly-half behind a dominant pack and Johnson an ever-present danger in the back line. Luke Levitt beat his man to touch down on 49 minutes with Mortimer converting, before James Ball scored an unconverted try on the hour.

With the game won Ath suffered a couple of lapses in concentration, the first allowing the home winger to win a kick chase to the corner for Loughborough’s first try.

This was soon cancelled out on 73 minutes when a crossfield kick saw Paul Ryder bravely dive for the ball and score and shortly after Johnson broke through the cover to put Tommy Mills away for their seventh try.

At the death Ath failed to deal with the final kick-off, allowing Loughborough to go through the phases and score a final converted try through their number eight.

Ath’s second team beat Stockwood Park 24-22 in a friendly, their thirds defeated Bedford Queens IIs 26-19 and Ath’s Colts hammered Luton 74-0.

This coming Saturday top-of-the-table Ilkeston visit Putnoe Woods with a 3pm kick-off, and the game is preceded by this season’s former player’s lunch.
