History repeated itself says Rayer as Bedford fall short

HISTORY repeated itself according to director of rugby Mike Rayer as his side again came up just short in the Championship semi-final this year.

Having lost at Worcester by just a single point in a one-off game the year before, Bedford went down 30-27 on aggregate to London Welsh in the two-legged affair this term, despite winning at Old Deer Park 27-14.

Rayer said: “We had a big mountain to climb after the first game and after the first half hour.

“I was disappointed we couldn’t get beyond one phase and couldn’t take the game to them. The players never stood up.

“Second half was a completely different story and all the lads were magnificent and all 21 contributed.

“We were done by one error or two errors and odd drop or mistake. Really fine margins and that’s bee the story of our season.

“We showed some guts in the last 10 minutes of the first half to get back into the game.

“We’ve been in those situations before, but just fell short.

“We had a couple of tough calls against us in both legs. When you are talking three points and you get those calls against you it’s pretty hard to deal with. It happened in the semi-final last year too.”

He also paid tribute to the players leaving Goldington Road: “It happens every year. It’s no different to any other year really. These guys have given their all to the club.”
