Fearn says brutish Blues can power on

BRUTISH prop Darren Fearn is hoping to make a real impact when he turns out for the Bedford Blues next season, writes Mark Wood.
The 23-year-old 6ft 3ins prop, who weighs in at 20 stone, is hoping the Blues can become equally well known for their power up front as they are for their creativity in the backs.
Fearn, who turned down remaining at Newcastle Falcons for a fourth season to move to Goldington Road, said: “If the forwards are known as the brutes up front and the backs are ripping teams apart there’s no reason we can’t win the Championship.
“I pride myself on my scrummaging. I do like to be physical because I am quite a big lad. I love carrying and love scrummaging.
“That’s what forwards pride themselves on. They’ve got lots of good backs and we are the brutes up front.
“I feel like I can bring that tight game but if it went out wide I would back my skill levels as well.”
With two props leaving Bedford this summer the former England Student cap is hoping to score more game time down south.
He said: “I didn’t want to sit at Newcastle and be third or fourth choice prop.
“I know I will have to work damn hard to play and have a good pre-season.
“I wanted to come here. I knew Bedford released a couple of props so I thought I would go here and stake a claim and I back myself.”
Kind words about the club from ex-Blues Will Chudley and Luke Fielden, now at the Falcons, helped to tee up the move and a chat with director of rugby Mike Rayer sealed the deal.
Kind words about the club from ex-Blues Will Chudley and Luke Fielden, now at the Falcons, helped to tee up the move and a chat with director of rugby Mike Rayer sealed the deal.
Fearn said: “I always knew Bedford was a good club. I’ve been with Luke Fielden for two years and Will Chudley for a year. I know quite a lot about it because I know Will Chudley quite well.
“I came to Bedford and met with Mike Rayer.
“I know Mike’s renowned for developing players and I need more game time.
“It’s a big move down south but Bedford was always the move I wanted. When I spoke to Mike and heard about Martin Hynes I knew Bedford was the place for me.”
And he highlighted the way Leicester prop Dan Cole’s career sky-rocketed with England honours after a spell at Bedford as one of his reasons for joining.
Fearn added: “If Dan Cole is going to be playing rugby for England it’s got to be good.
“I had a few clubs I was talking to in the Championship and a couple in the Premiership that put nothing solid on the table.
“As soon as Bedford were keen it was my number one target.
“I had a chat with Bedford about coming there next year. I thought it was the best move for me.
“I had seen them play and it was always a positive move.
“Mike and the coaches are known for developing players but it’s also a strong team.”
