BLUES star Jonathon Fisher has re-joined London Irish after an impressive debut season at Goldington Road, writes James Heneghan.

The 23-year-old, who has featured for England U20s and England Sevens, joined the Blues from Irish at the start of the season and played a key role in Bedford’s push for promotion.

But Fisher, who has featured at lock, flanker and number eight for Bedford, has signed a two-year contract at the Madejski Stadium.

Fisher said: “I am thrilled to be joining London Irish again. The club has played a huge role in my rugby development over the last seven years and I want to repay that faith.”

Blues forward coach Martin Hynes said: “I’m really pleased for him because he’s a talented athlete and has stood out this season.

“We thought it was going to happen and now it’s been finalised I’m thrilled for the lad.

“To be honest I think one more season in the Championship would have done no harm at all because he’s 12 months away from becoming even better.

“He’s already a good player but he won’t get the same playing time in the Premiership so won’t develop as well. That’s why the Championship set-up works so well, it allows players to develop.”

The loss of Fisher will be a blow after he produced some outstanding performances that helped Bedford reach the RFU Championship semi-finals. His importance to the side was recognised by fans who voted him as the joint Bedford Blues Player Of The Season alongside Chris Locke.

But Hynes is confident the club will cope fine without him, adding: “It is a blow to us but that’s what we do at this club. Our job is to develop players, we do it all the time.

“The challenge now is to do the same next season and pick up another player and develop him.”
