Newcastle old boy Darren Fearn believes it was the ‘little mistakes’ that cost the Blues as they lost 29-20 in a closely contested battle at Goldington Road on Saturday, writes Michael Hann.

The Blues trailed 20-6 at half time, but two James Pritchard tries saw them move to within six points of the Championship leaders.

However the Falcons continued to score points at regular intervals – ending Bedford’s hopes of what would have been a superb comeback.

Fearn said: “It was a few little mistakes at vital times – but I thought the boys did really well.

“If we had just backed ourselves a little bit more at times I think we would have got close to winning.”

The Blues conceded a try just before half time and Fearn says that was hard to take after keeping things tight in the first period.

“That was a bit of a kick in the head,” he admitted. “But it is just one of those things.

“It just shows we are up there with the top teams in the league and, on our day, if a few more things had gone our way we would have come away with a win.”

Fearn joined Bedford in the summer after a spell at Newcastle and the prop said it was nice to come up against his former side.

“It was good to see a few of the old boys and I’ll have a catch up with them,” he continued.

“It would have been even better if we had got a win but they are a good team and they came here and did the basics well.”

The loss against Newcastle was the Blues’ second consecutive Championship defeat, however Fearn says that does not reflect the team’s performances in those games.

He added: “We have had a cracking start to the season. We lost last week and today but we’re a good team.

“The defeats haven’t been because we have been absolutely atrocious. It is just little mistakes or other teams playing well on the day.

“But as a team we will be up there come the busy end of the season.”
