Everything comes together for massive Bedford win
Blues scrum-half Luke Baldwin says his side’s 87-10 win over Stirling County on Saturday shows that they are a ‘force to be reckoned with’ in the British & Irish Cup this season, writes Michael Hann.
The Blues were in control from the very first minute when Mark Kohler got the game’s opening try and they went on to score 12 more in the demolition of the RBS Premiership side.
“I think everything came together today,” Baldwin said afterwards. “Everyone put in a good performance, the forwards got us over the game line early doors and that just makes everything easier for the backs to finish off.
“We want to set the standard in our group and also show the other teams in our group that we are going to be a force to be reckoned with. We have got Neath back-to-back in a few weeks’ time which will also be a big couple of games.
“I think that certainly set a marker for the rest of the tournament and stands us in really good stead for the next two weeks – we have got a massive couple of games coming up.”
Baldwin was a constant thorn in Stirling’s side throughout the afternoon as his creativity at the breakdown created a number of opportunities as well as getting on the scoresheet twice himself.
His first try looked like he may have knocked the ball forward on the line, but the scrum-half was delighted that he’d done enough to score. It is always good to get over the whitewash,” Baldwin continued. “I actually didn’t think the ref was going to give the first one as I thought I might have spilt the ball – but downward pressure wins out in that case!”
Ladies Day at Goldington Road saw the Blues run out in front of their biggest crowd of the season and Baldwin was delighted they gave their fans something to cheer about.
He added: “It is always nice to play in front a big crowd and it is a great occasion so to put in a good shift was excellent.”
