Deluge of tries sees Ampthill thump Havant in fine win
Ampthill 66 Havant 0
PROMOTION hopefuls Ampthill washed away Havant with a deluge of tries at a cold and wet Dillingham Park on Saturday.
Light rain became a torrential downpour before half time, but not even the sticky underfoot conditions could stop Ampthill from cementing second place in National League Three London & South East with a 66-0 victory.
With handling conditions poor the backs were spectators for much of the game as Amps made one change in the pack, one in the backs and three on the bench.
Amps’ forwards dominated the game in the loose, with the visitors’ pack much more equal at the set piece. Neither side though was able to move the ball effectively through the backs with the error count reflecting the conditions.
A’s scored six tries in the first half, with scrum-half Thomas Warfield registering a hat-trick (six, 20 and 32 minutes), while tighthead prop Ross Davies (25), full-back Craig Ross (38) and hooker Richard Emms in first half injury time, all touched down with fly-half Christopher Anderson converting four as Amps led 38-0 at the break.
After a ruthless first half performance from the Ampthill pack, Havant saw more of the ball in the second half without really threatening the line. Four further tries came in the second half as replacement prop James Wright (45), centre Jonathan Raven (50), left wing Kyle Palm (68) and number eight Stuart Riding (79), all crossed the whitewash with Anderson converting them all.
The visitors spurned more than one kickable chance in pursuit of a try, but couldn’t find a way through A’s defence.
This Saturday Ampthill travel to Dorking for their twice postponed fixture. Amps are nine points ahead of their hosts who lost at leaders Canterbury, but four teams still remain in the hunt for second place and a play-off spot.
