Blues must learn their lessons following loss
29 January 2012..... Leeds Carnegie v Bedford Blues. Carnegie's Will Cliff runs into Blues Brendan Burke, Sean Tomes and Stef Liebenberg
FLANKER Jon Fisher said he was thrilled to be playing rugby again after his long lay-off with a stress fracture, writes James Heneghan.
The 23-year-old made a substitute appearance in the Bedford Blues’ 21-17 loss to Leeds Carnegie on Sunday.
He said: “It was good to get back playing again. I felt a bit like a rabbit in the headlights, but I’m very pleased to be out on the pitch again. I feel fit and I’m looking forward to being out with the lads again, but there’s a lot of hard work to be done.”
Fisher’s return is a huge boost for Bedford as they approach the play-offs after his outstanding early season form.
But he couldn’t prevent the Blues from sliding to their fifth away defeat, saying: “It was our discipline that cost us, unfortunately.
“We gave away penalties at the wrong time and you can’t afford to do that, but it’s a good learning curve for us. You need games like this going into the play-offs so we’ll use this and learn from it. We can’t make excuses because we knew coming up here that it would be a tough track to play on so we know we have to come to games like this to win these types of matches.”
The loss to Leeds adds to Bedford’s consistency problems, but Fisher feels there’s little to worry about.
He added: “We’re still building towards the play-offs and there’s a lot of competition. We’re building and we want to make sure that we win these sorts of games.
“Make no mistake, we came here today and we grafted well, but we should have won it if it wasn’t for our ill-discipline.
“It’s important to have games like this in these conditions because we may face it again come the play-offs.”
