BLUES: Rayer unhappy with officials

Blues' boss pleased with try-scorer Taylor

Mike Rayer was critical of referee David Walker in the aftermath of the Bedfrod Blues' 17-15 victory against Aberavon Wizards in the British & Irish Cup.

A hat-trick of tries from winger Duncan Taylor, the third and decisive score coming deep in injury time, enabled the hosts to snatch the spoils, but it was the stop-start nature of the contest that frustrated the Blues' director of rugby.

"Aberavon got away with loads out there," he said. "I've no idea what the officials were doing at the breakdown.

"If you can't get the basics of the laws right at the breakdown then you've got a problem.

"It was an awful game for people to come and watch, probably one of the worst I've been involved in.

"We did make errors, but we couldn't get any quick ball because they were lying all over it. You can't put your feet on people these days in the ruck so what can you do?

"If the officials aren't taking care of it you end up with a stymied game that's a bunch of pile-ups."

Walker's whistle-happy style and reluctance to take action following a number of altercations didn't halp matters and added a tetchy air to the contest which saw the Blues emerge with a warranted victory according to Rayer.

He continued: "It was a deserved win, we scored three tries to none which goes to show we were the only side trying to play out there.

"We're disappointed in the way we played, but in terms of character, we've gone to the end and scored a good try and a fantastic conversion to win the game.

"We probably should have taken a couple of kicks at goal early on, but we fancied getting over the line.

"We're building towards the play-offs and that's a win to start a big week for us."

And Rayer reserved a word of praise for Taylor who put his name in the frame for the weeks ahead, saying: "They were three good tries from a kid who's doing alright for us.

"I can't speak highly enough of Duncan, he's improving week in and week out."
