Winger Mark Kohler played an influential role in Bedford Blues’ 48-23 British & Irish Cup victory against Bedwas on Saturday, writes Michael Hann.

The winger chipped in with two of the Blues’ eight tries against the welsh side and he was a constant threat throughout the match.

He said: “It was a good performance. We put some really good phases together at the start and it was nice to get a few tries before half time.

“We slacked off in the second half and let them have around 20 points which meant they came back into it and we were a little bit sloppy in defence.

“But overall we did a job here on a bit of a dodgy track so we are happy with it.”

Kohler started a match for the first time this season and he hopes to have given director of rugby Mike Rayer a selection headache for next weekend’s match against Stirling.

“I am pretty happy,” the 23-year-old said. “I got my hands on the ball a few times which was nice and I tried my best to work the ball and get involved as much as I could.

“As long as the coaches think that I have performed well here and that I have done my best then hopefully I can take that forward next week.”

It was the perfect start to the competition with the Blues already top of their pool and Kohler believes his team can go all the way this year.

“I think we have got a pretty good group that we can target and get home and away wins,” he continued.

“If we win all our games then we should secure a home quarter-final.”

Against Bedwas Kohler and his team-mates were sporting Bedford’s new pink third kit.

He added: “Its glorious isn’t it. It’s all for a good cause supporting breast cancer.

“We are just happy to help them out and that is part of what Bedford is about – helping different charities.

“We have got Movember coming up as well and we are happy to help with that too.”
