BLUES: Bedford Blues have announced that they will not be defending the Investabroad Properties National Colts Cup next season.

Bedford won the competition for the fifth time in six seasons last month but the National Colts Cup is now changing from an U19 to an U18 tournament.

Blues academy director of Rugby, Denis Ormesher said: “We have decided that we will not enter the competition this year.

“The move to an U18 competition does not fit with our player development needs.

“The East Midlands have done a great job with the competition, which has helped to develop our players in a competitive environment in recent seasons.

“However as the game changes we need to change and adapt to improve our player development.

“We will be concentrating on playing games at U19 level, and above, to help prepare players for the Blues first XV.”
