Blues winger James Stephenson believes his side’s 45-25 win over Leeds Carnegie on Sunday shows the Blues are ‘in a good place at the moment’, writes Michael Hann.

Coming into the match Leeds were just three points behind Bedford, however Stephenson’s side blew their opponents away, running in seven tries on the way to a convincing victory.

Speaking after the match Stephenson said: “I’m really happy. It is not a pleasant place to come to, but the boys really fronted up and the scoreline tells a story.”

Despite leading 33-13 at half time, Stephenson said they were still wary of a dangerous Carnegie side.

“They are a good team, so we couldn’t say it was over because they have the ability to score at will,” he said.

“But when we got a few phases together and the backs got the ball it opened up for us.

“It was a really good performance from the boys and the scoreline shows that we are in a good place at the moment.”

Stephenson has suffered with a toe injury that has kept him out of the last five games and the former Blackheath man is glad to be playing again.

“It is great to be back,” he enthused. “It has been a long month and a half.

“I was a little bit rusty but it was good to get the cobwebs out and hopefully I can keep getting better and get back to where I was.”

The victory over Leeds concludes the halfway stage of the Championship season and the tricky winger is pleased with the how things have gone so far.

“We have made a statement for the first half of the campaign,” he continued.

“We are sitting quite high up and as long as we carry on like we have been we should be in good shape to go through to the play-offs.”

Next up for the Blues is Neath in the British & Irish Cup and Stephenson says it is a competition they want to do well in.

“We are looking forward to it,” he added.

“We have said that the B&I Cup is important to us this year so we are going to go and try and put ourselves in a good position in the cup.”
