Big clubs give Goldington Road the seal of approval

Goldington Road is set for the seal of approval when two of the biggest Premiership teams in the country meet there in the LV=Cup on Friday, November 9, writes Mark Wood.

Saracens are hosting Leicester Tigers at the home of the Blues, and with the minimum standards criteria to enter the Premiership in tatters this fixture would appear to give a glowing endorsement to Goldington Road.

The primacy of tenure stipulation has already been exposed and other caveats are now there to be shot at.

Director of rugby Mike Rayer is also hoping it will be a great occasion, and believes that whatever ‘will be, will be’ after that.

He said: “I think Goldington Road is a fantastic place to play rugby, simple.

“The ground is a work in progress and we will continue that and we’ve improved it year-on-year.

“It’s a great playing surface and the slope is infamous. I think it all adds to the mix.

“We’ve had five, six, seven thousand crowds here in the past, and what will be will be after that.

“The issues surrounding it I can’t control. I think it’s brilliant for the club and brilliant for the town.”

Chairman Geoff Irvine is also looking forward to the encounter, adding: “First and foremost it is a one-off. We will be doing our level best to get 4,000 people there.

“Saracens said to us we would like to play the game there and Leicester agreed.

“If they weren’t happy with the facilities there’s no way they would risk their very expensive players to play.

“It’s a credit to the club and a credit to the facilities that two of the best rugby clubs in the country have accepted to come here and play. Tickets have been going well.”

The next two weeks are massively important for the Blues, with Goldington Road hosting their annual Fireworks display on Friday, November 2, Newcastle Falcons visiting the following day and then Saracens versus Leicester Tigers.

Therefore the club shop will be opening on weekdays from Monday, October 29, to Thursday, November 8, from noon to 6pm to sell tickets.
