Bedford’s spirit shines through in last-gasp victory

Martin Hynes was delighted with the spirit of his players as they claimed a dramatic 22-21 win against Doncaster at Castle Park on Friday, writes Michael Hann.

Bedford looked to be dead and buried with minutes left on the clock as they tried desperately to grab the try they needed for victory.

After camping themselves on the Doncaster five-metre line, the Blues were eventually rewarded as Josh Bassett scored.

Brendan Burke converted and Bedford had snatched victory out of the clutches of defeat.

Speaking afterwards Hynes was full of praise for his players – in particular the work of the forwards in the closing stages.

He said: “The forwards were under pressure and the moment one of them spilt the ball they knew it would be game over.

“But they managed to get through what must have been 20 phases of play to keep going and get a score.

“These lads are a great group of fellows, they’re honest and they keep going and going.”

The Knights can feel hard done by not to get anything from the game and the forwards coach says it reaffirms how competitive the Championship is this season.

Hynes continued: “If you look at Doncaster, they are at the bottom end of the table yet they are a fantastic side.

“People say you should go to Doncaster and win easily but that is a load of rubbish – the sides we play week in week out are all good sides.”

Bedford now have a week off, before taking on Cornish Pirates and Hynes is unsure whether having a break is a good thing or not.

He added: “I am undecided to be honest, these lads know nothing other than hard work and sometimes I don’t want them to put their feet up too much.

“They are back in on Thursday, so they have a few days off and hopefully we’ll keep their feet on the floor.

“We’ll have a good day at the office tomorrow (Saturday) as we’re off to the horse racing.

“There will be a bit of bonding and then it’s back to the hard work.”
