Hinckley 6 Ampthill 21

Ampthill returned to the top of National League Three Midlands ahead of the new year with a 21-6 victory at Hinckley on Saturday, as previous leaders Sutton Coldfield’s game at Derby was postponed due to the weather.

Persistent rain which stopped as the game started, but there were plenty of handing errors on a heavy pitch.

In a disjointed, with frequent stoppages, Amps took the lead with an early Elliot Clements-Hill penalty.

Hinckley equalised with a penalty of their own, before A’s number eight Philip Lane was driven over the line from a five-metre scrum for an unconverted try midway through the half.

Dean Adamson extended Amps’ lead when the winger’s pace enabled him to score an unconverted try in the corner on 31 minutes, created by a quick tap, break and well-timed pass from scrum-half Gavin Williams.

Both sides exchanged penalties on the stroke of half time as A’s led 16-6 at the break.

The second half was even more mistake-ridden with neither side truly threatening to score until the dying moments when Hinckley, forcing the game inside their own 22, lost the ball and Amps fly-half Daniel Lavery gathered and drove over to cement victory.

Amps’ next game is at home to Bournville on January 5.

Meanwhile, on Boxing Day, a special charity game will take place at 11am at Dillingham Park to raise money for the Meningitis Trust.

The annual event remembers two young Ampthill mini and youth graduates whose lives ended far too early.
