Amps bag easy victory

Ampthill 32 Syston 0

Ampthill enjoyed a 32-0 victory over Syston in their National League Three Midlands clash at the weekend.

Amps squad saw a number of changes in the pack as James Wright returned to the front row following his long injury lay-off after shoulder surgery, while George Warner (hooker) and Jake Foster (openside flanker) were given their first starts of the season.

Joseph Healey and Josh Smith were brought on to the bench, while Gavin Williams was a late replacement at scrum half with Paul Davies returning at outside centre.

In a game which failed to hit the intensity of recent A’s performances, the hosts were never really under pressure.

They failed to capitalise on their possession and territorial advantage though, partly to a lack of precision and spirited defence from the visitors.

That saw Ampthill give away far too many turnovers from knock ons and forward passes when in scoring positions.

Ampthill took the lead in third minute with fullback Elliot Clements-Hill converting a penalty.

He followed up with two unconverted tries (18 and 40), sandwiching another from right wing Dean Adamson in the 27th minute converted by Clements-Hill, to leave the score 20-0 at oranges.

The second half, if anything, was even less entertaining with an unconverted 56th minute try from openside Jake Foster after a five metre lineout catch and drive, plus a try from centre Jonathan Raven who was in support when his centre partner Paul Davies split the defence in midfield, converted by Clements-Hill on 74 minutes.

Ampthill host Broadstreet at Dillingham Park this weekend.
