ROWING: Goodnight Vienna as vets end in style

Veteran rowers from Bedford finished off the international and local regatta season in medal-winning style.

Bedford Rowing Club's Sara Reay and Star Club's Miriam Taylor teamed up with rowers from Sheffield and Agecroft to compete at the FISA Masters Regatta in Vienna.

They swept the board in the women's coxless fours events. Racing on the eight-lane course on the River Danube, they started off by winning the event for rowers of a minimum average of 27.

The next day, they overcame a strong head-wind to dominate by winning Veteran B and Veteran C (minimum crew average age 43).

They beat crews from Germany, Hungary and Estonia along the way.

In other action, Alistair Forsythe, Ian Darnell, Chris Wisbey and Lydia Swift of Bedford Rowing Club teamed up with Bill Sadler of Hornets Boat Club, Cambridge recently to win the Veteran F coxed four events at both Gloucester and Ross-on-Wye Veteran Regattas.

At Gloucester Veterans Regatta, they defeated a crew from St Neots Rowing Club.

The next day at Ross Veteran Regatta, the same combination beat crews from Llandaff and Worcester Rowing Club.

Closer to home on Sunday, Tom Robb raced at Cambridge Autumn Regatta in the Veteran B Single Sculls event.

He beat a sculler from Yare Boat Club in the final.

The next rowing event run by Bedford Rowing Club is Bedford Fours and Small Boats Head on Sunday, October 11.
