Rowers secure Thames double
Bedford Rowing Club's ladies brought home two victories on the River Thames in London.
They were racing in the annual Women's Eights Head of the River Race on Saturday, against 300 crews ranging from Olympians to club rowers, over four-and-a-half miles from Chiswick to Putney.
Ariella Combe coxed a crew also featuring Star Club's Ruby Ellam, plus rowers from St Neots, Dame Alice Harpur School and Isle of Ely RC, which won the school/junior event against ten other boats in a time of 20mins 4secs, finishing 29th overall.
And Sara Reay teamed up with Star Club's Miriam Taylor and athletes from six other clubs to win the veterans event in 20.18mins, finishing 40th overall.
Bedford RC's S3 crew finished 85th overall in a time of 21 minutes exactly – 24th out of 75 in their category, making up almost 70 places on their original start position. The crew was Vicky Rigby, Sara Orme, Lydia Swift, Jayne Smith, Liane Higgins, Ellen Baldwin, Beth Jackson, Claire Newton and cox Clarissa Coveney.
Star Club's senior women were also racing at S3 level, and finished 28
seconds behind Bedford.
On Sunday, Bedford Rowing Club sent three men's eights to the Hammersmith Head and its extreme conditions.
The men's development squad of Roger Williams, Neil Duke, Chris
Varney, Tim Coles, Tom Heath, Dan Turner, Chris Phelps, Simon Philips and cox Sara Reay raced at S4 status and were making their Thames debut in preparation for the Mens Eights Head of the River Race on March 21.
Both the S2 eight and the veterans boat overtook other crews.
Star Club also excelled at the National Junior Sculling Head at
Dorney Lake, Windsor, on Monday.
With a strong tail wind and choppy conditions, the WJ17 4X of Ruby Ellam, Eleanor Grimley, Victoria Huckle and Charlotte Cook took the gold medal ahead of Marlow RC.
The J17 4X of Tom Durrant, Tom Beechinor, Ross Mizen and Andrew Walker secured silver behind Runcorn, and the WJ14 4X+ of Amy Stockton, Alanah Hamilton, Laura Haggerwood, Claire Hughes and cox Aiden Grimley finished in a respectable seventh place out of 38 starters in their first major event competing as a quad.
