Rovers can beat the drop

Fitzgerald is defiant despite defeat

"Caged lions" Barton Rovers can still avoid the drop from Division One Midlands of the Zamaretto Southern League, according to boss Gary Fitzgerald.

Rovers slipped to a frustrating 2-0 defeat at Bedworth United on Saturday due to two goalkeeping errors from their triallist Stevenage stopper.

Ramsay (17) and Barlone (75) netted for the hosts, while Joel Mason had several chances for the visitors, but Fitzgerald admitted that the goals caused his side to lose their way.

He said: "It was two mistakes and two goals which was a disappointing fact. We have got to stay positive."

But he was pleased with the way his side competed on the day, saying: "That's the frustrating thing, performances all season have been of a very high standard."

Fitzgerald was critical of their defensive record which has seen them concede between two and three goals a game.

But in spite of this, he believes Barton can still stave off relegation.

He continued: "I believe we just need that one win and the picture will change. Aylesbury won on Saturday and have hopes of bypassing us.

"Heads are down and it's becoming increasingly difficult to keep the players' heads up.

"These 16 games that are there need to be played. The whole league and everyone has written us off.

"I believe there are four teams in there and I still believe we can catch Bromsgrove and Beaconsfield."

And he asserted Barton must take points from games against teams who have nothing to play for, saying: "We are down there fighting for our lives."

Last night Barton were due to visit Marlow, on Saturday they host Woodford United and on Tuesday they entertain Burnham.

Speaking yesterday, Fitzgerald added: "We've got Marlow tonight and it will be a good chance to get that first win. Tonight you give me the worst game ever and a 1-0 win and I will be over the moon."
