Rokermen bow out of FA Vase

Waders, United and Reds lose, Blues draw but Potton win in county cup

Two second half goals from Warren Byrne and Steven Johnson proved enough to put County Durham side Shildon into the fifth round proper of the FA Vase at Stotfold's Roker Park this afternoon.

The Rokermen had their chances but when Byrne's 56th minute shot was deflected off Ian Motrison's boot to wrong-foot home keeper Brad Gillham who had the original effort covered, the writing was on the wall.

And when Johnson added a second seven minutes later, the Railwaymen – who play their football in Division One of the Northern League – ended Stotfold's hopes of progressing any further.

However they get the chance of Beds Senior Cup glory on Tuesday when they make the short trip to Sharpenhoe Road where they face what were thought to be struggling Zamaretto League side Barton Rovers who shocked the Blues today.

This coming Tuesday the Rokermen play Barton in the quarter-finals of the Beds FA Senior Cup while they will play only their second league game in a month at home to Northampton Spencer next weekend. After that, the following Tuesday they host the Swans from Newport Pagnell Town back at Roker.

At Sharpenhoe Road in the Zamaretto League derby, an 89th minute Marc Leach penalty saved Arlesey Town's blushed who looked to heading for a 1-0 defeat against strugglers Barton Rovers who opened the scoring on 29 minutes thanks to Mason.

And in the other Division One Midlands county derby, Leighton Town got the better of Biggleswade Town with a 3-1 scoreline with all three home goals scored by Ben Gallant on 24, 45 and 69 minutes.

The Bell Close clash had looked to be all square when Jamie Steele levelled for the Waders just before the interval but Gallant (who had spent half a season at Potton under former boss Dean ) had other ideas!

In the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division, Langford were at Hanwell Town where they went down 3-1 thanks to a Blaise O'Brien hat-trick.

The Reds slipped 2-0 behind but Adam Wombwell (formerly with Southill Alexander) pulled one back in the 32nd minute. And while Langford has chances to get on terms, it was a full five minutes into stoppage time when O'Brien went on to complete his hat-trick.

Meanwhile Biggleswade United, despite a host of goalscoring chances also went down at home to Hertford Town whose only goal came on 31 minutes and was scored by Owen Beale.

With several Stratton Upper School students practicing their 'match reporting' skills on the Second Meadow touchline, they were unanimous in naming the Hertford goalkeeper as man of the match following a series of fine saves.

And finally one east Beds side who did win today were Potton United. They were at Kempston's Hillgrounds for an early 1.30pm kick off against AFC Kempston Town in the quarter-finals of the Beds FA Senior Trophy although they needed extra time before Tom Galvin's side finally went through 3-1.

Dave McMurrough opened the scoring on 11 minutes but Kempston levelled from the penalty spot on the half hour.

The home side also had several good chances in the second half but in ended 1-1 before Potton sub Jez McMurrough scored on 95 and 115 minutes to earn his side a home semi-final against felow UCL Division One rivals AFC Kempston Rovers.
