Roberts hails Randall's impact

A home quarter-final is the prize that awaits Bedfordshire as they prepare for their last MCCA Trophy group game in Cheshire.

Jon Walford's side make the trip to Marple on Sunday having already booked a place in the knockout stages.

Their opponents, who have won just one of their three outings in the competition, cannot qualify for the next stage, but all-rounder Andy Roberts doesn't expect an easy ride.

He said: "They are usually a strong one-day side. They have not had a great year so far but they get players from the Lancashire League and around there and are usually hard to beat."

Beds will go into the game with a 100 per cent record, and Roberts added: "We've lost out for the past few years so we want to keep winning."

With a poor record in the Trophy in recent history, the county have turned the form book on its head, and Roberts believes that new coach Derek Randall has played a significant role.

He continued: "It's the same players as before, but we have been playing some good stuff.

"Derek has got us playing well with a bit of belief and our fielding is a bit better.

"Someone with that kind of aura makes a difference. When he says something, people listen. If he says 'you're a good player', you go out believing it."
