Rayer surprised by Blues' margin of victory
Bedford boss delighted by handsome win
Blues' director of rugby Mike Rayer expressed his delight at his team's performance after an impressive 51-3 win against Plymouth at Goldington Road on Saturday.
Bedford scored a total of eight tries without reply in a heavily one-sided match that saw Ollie Dodge claim a hat-trick.
Rayer said: "It was a very good performance, I didn't wake up this morning thinking we would get 50 points so it's just the start we wanted.
"I think we did a lot of things well, we did the basics particularly well and we played the game at pace and tempo and that's what we wanted to do, it's something we can build on."
Rayer named three debutants for the opening match of the season and afterwards he paid tribute to the new players, saying: "I thought the new boys did really well considering it's the first match they've played competitively for us.
"They've settled in extremely well and that is a big benefit to the rest of the squad."
With a number of players currently out injured, Rayer also pointed to the strength in depth of his squad.
He added: "The best part about it was seeing the other boys sitting in the stands, who now know that they've got a job to do in order to get into the team because we set some high standards today.
"I thought Paul Tupai was magnificent for the time he was on, Darryl Veenendaal and Jackson Wray also put in good performances so it was very pleasing.
"And the moral amongst the squad is good and you can see that when we score tries because everyone's getting a pat on the back for playing a part in setting up the try.
"Scoring tries is what you work for every week so it's not just about the try scorer."
