Potton Town win Butcher Shield
Ickwell High scoring contest
Heritage Cup holders Potton Town lifted the Butcher Shield following a four wicket win against reigning East Beds Shield champions Ickwell on Wednesday.
In an entertaining 14x8 ball overs contest, in which over 350 runs were scored, there were two outstanding contributions. Ickwell opener John Cole-Edwardes was stumped just eight runs short of his century although man of the match was Potton's Steven Moules with an unbeaten 73 as his side chased down a big Ickwell total.
Batting first on their own wicket, Ickwell's Milin Gandhi (15) was caught by Stephen Williams off the bowling of Angus Berry in the deep going for a trademark six and with Jay Szwajbak (27) helping Cole-Edwardes take the score to 132-2 before he became one of Sean Stevens three victims, Chris Asque then added a valuable 15 before the innings closed on 176-5.
In reply Potton openers Sean Stevens (12) and James Howlett (33) put on 50 for the first wicket and while Williams contributed a valuable 23, it was Moules' 73 that did the damage as he helped his side get home with eight balls to spare. Their task was also aided by some wayward Ickwell bowling which conceded no fewer than 23 extra runs.
The shield was presented by Mrs Butcher to Potton skipper Colin Stevens while the charity collection amounted to 55 before the players' contribution.
This year's Heritage Cup semi-finals have been arranged by the competition's committee and will take place over the next two Mondays.
The first is at the Cople-Argus ground on June 7 involving Waresley and Flitwick while the second, on Monday, June 14 is at Biggleswade and is between Eaton Socon and Ickwell. Both matches will start at 6pm.
