Plucky Putney stopped by Murphy

Referee puts an end to Putney's effort

An early stoppage in the fourth round condemned Gavin Putney to defeat against Danny Murphy at Stadium MK tonight.

The Lutonian had competed valiantly against his St Albans adversary, but Murphy consistently edged the encounter and the referee was forced to end the contest just 24 seconds into the final round, as Putney slipped to a second defeat in his third pro fight.

Putney, sporting black and white shorts, got huge vocal support from the packed arena before the fight had even begun.

Both inexperienced boxers were fast and frantic in the opening moments and wasted far too many shots.

Turning his back, Murphy caught Putney with a cheap shot in the first round but little was landed until a Putney left opened up the unbeaten St Albans boxer.

A straight right thudded against Murphy's brow in the second round, but again there was far too much windmilling at thin air as both boxers looked for big shots.

Too many clinches also marred the action as the result hung by a thread going into the third round.

Murphy made a bright start to it, but it was again Putney who looked to go forward at every opportunity.

Putney was caught off balance midway through the third and Murphy looked to press home his advantage with a series of sapping body blows.

The unsteady Putney returned to his chair with a swollen left eye as the pair retired before the final round.

Murphy caught Putney with a couple of great blows early in the fourth and, with the Lutonian swaying, the referee was quick to step in and stop the fight.

The result leaves Putney with one win and two defeats from his three professional fights, while Murphy made it two wins and one draw from his three pro outings.
