NETBALL: Seven-straight victories and a closely-fought final have afforded Bedford Girls’ School’s U16 A netball team a place in the national finals of one of the sport’s most prestigious inter-school competitions.
The competed in the Regional Round of the England Netball National Schools Competition at Hassenbrook School in Essex last Saturday as they finished runners-up. Demonstrating considerable skill and strategy throughout the tournament, Gemma Crook, Harriet Clough, Bea Caldwell, Johanna Rawlings, Charlotte Stevens, Katie Rossitter, Grace Wyatt, Meghan Pemberton and Poppy Blair secured six clear wins over teams from all over the East of England, winning their group stage convincingly.
Victories against Norwich High School (16-4), Kesgrave School (13-6), Cromwell College (11-4), Broxbourne School (11-9), St Clere’s School (18-1) and Southend High School (15-8) took them through to the semi-finals where they faced formidable opponents in the shape of Notre Dame School.
After an outstanding performance, Bedford triumphed 14-9 to qualify for the final where they again met Broxbourne, who they’d already faced in the opening group games. In an incredibly hard-fought and exciting final, Broxbourne narrowly edged it 14-12 and both teams will compete in the National Finals on March 17.
Captain Katie Rossiter added: “We pulled together well and played really well as a team in the Regional Round. We faced a lot of tough competition but won most of our games by a good clear margin. The final was extremely close, really enjoyable and terrific preparation for the National Finals which we’re all looking forward to.”
