Young tennis ace Claudia Johnson swept the board at the County Closed Championships, becoming U16 and U18 girls’ county champion and winning the U18 mixed doubles and the U18 girls’ doubles finals.

Claudia, currently in Year 11 at Bedford Modern School, faced Sofia Conti in the U18 final and won comfortably 6-1; 6-2 to retain her title.

She then took on doubles partner Shanice Marshall-Sefia in a nail-biting match which lasted for three and a half hours.

Claudia, 15, won the first set 7-6 but lost the second 4-6. In the third set Claudia fought back from 6-4 down to level the tie-break and went on to win the next two points to take the match in dramatic fashion.

Unsurprisingly, the dynamic duo then teamed up to comfortably take the U18 girls’ doubles trophy with a score of 6-4; 6-2.

Claudia’s success continued when, on the same day, she went on to partner Pete Jamieson, winning the mixed U18 doubles trophy 6-3; 6-3 for her fourth title.

The teenager said: “I couldn’t believe that I’d won all four finals. After 11 hours on court I was exhausted but elated!”

Heather Gilbert, co-ordinator of girls’ games added: “This is a tremendous achievement and well-deserved. Claudia trains exceptionally hard and her determined approach has clearly paid off.”
