Improving on their medal tally from 2014 over both weekends of the East Region Championships, Modernian Swimming Club battled hard to finish in fifth place overall.
It was an impressive effort from Modernian, who were only beaten by four of the region’s strongest clubs – Hatfield, City of Peterborough, Team Ipswich and UEA Norwich.
At the 15/O championships, the club moved up from seventh place last year to joint-sixth this year, while in the 14/U championships they moved up a fantastic four places from ninth to fifth.
The club had 50 finals swims, with 63 of the 180 swims overall setting new personal bests.
Oliver Maltby set two new Bedfordshire county records, in the 50m butterfly (25.97) and the 100m backstroke (1.00.34), while Becky Burton set a new county record in the 50m breaststroke (33.37).
The club’s most prolific medallist was Chloe Lence, who won three golds, one silver and one bronze in her age group.
Burton claimed two golds and one silver medal in three breaststroke events, with Maltby winning a gold and a bronze and Brandon Nabarro bagging a bronze in the open age group events.
Aiyana Lawson won a gold and two silvers, Tia Wilson took home a gold, two silvers and a bronze.
Meanwhile, Jamie McCaffray claimed one of each colour in their respective age groups.
The club’s success over the last few years has been phenomenal, both on the county stage and also at regional level.
Modernians are now looking towards the British Summer Championships and the Home Nation Championships over the summer.
