Gold medal joy for Paul at judo Masters

Paul Newbury of Bedford Judo Club landed a gold at the Wycombe Masters.

Paul had entered the Kyu grade under 81kgs section. After some convincing wins Paul finished his last contest with his favourite throw Kubi-Nage.

Adam Terl returned to form and finished with a silver in the under 73kgs. One of his contests was with commonwealth silver medallist Craig Homer, Adam beat him with a full ippon proving his return to form .

Gareth Fenton also gained a silver in the under 100kgs(45-50 yrs old). He had some hard fights ,one of which was a graded 6th Dan.

He gained 37points towards his 4th Dan .

Dan gradings took place on June 13. Four club members succeeded in gaining the coveted Black belt .

Mathew Loeffler, 17, won both his individual fights to give him a line of three brown belts, Mathew beat all three with clean ippons .

Following Mathew was 16 year old Will Cohen who trains at Flitwick under coach Pete Whiteside but is also a member at Bedford. He beat all his opponents with clean ippons .

Sam Brown became the third Bedford Judoka to gain his Black belt. The fourth success came from big Loren Short .

Tom Shnettler and Simon Head both gained ten points . Both Kevin Pope and Rahim Masood fought well in their contest, but neither could produce any wins . Also fighting was Ian Leroux 1st Dan , Ian was attempting promotion to 2nd Dan but his three draws were not enough for promotion .

This weekend 10 year old Laura Allen went to the Shudan Judo Club in Wellingborough for a competition.

Being the smallest of her group, Laura won her first fight with her trade mark left hand O-Goshi , unfortunately she lost the second fight to a hold down but came home with a well deserved silver medal .
