If you want to set yourself a new sporting challenge this year, join the Bedford Singles Tennis League which is looking for new players of any standard.

It is an easy way to have some competitive fun, and tennis offers one of the best full body workouts in sport, say the organisers.

The league is open to men and women of all standards aged 18 and above. Players are graded into groups and arrange their own matches at a mutually convenient time. Any court that suits both players can be used – and there are 26 free public courts in Bedford!

Run by a not-for-profit organisation, Local Tennis League, the league gives prizes and free balls for everyone who completes 3 matches by the half way mark.

In the first year, in 2013, almost 100 matches were played. This year, the organisers are hoping to double that with twice as many players and new players are welcome.

The league runs from Thursday, January 23 until Wednesday, March 19.

Entry is £12 at and the closing date is Monday, January 20.
