Bedford & County’s top men’s team travelled to Derby last Saturday for the third match in the British Athletics League.
Despite the athletes recording several personal bests, Bedford only came fifth of the eight teams.
However, they did beat closest rival Yeovil, further increasing the gap over the other teams vying for the second promotion spot in the division.
Swansea are now assured of winning the division but Bedford are well clear in second place.
Top performances came from sprint star Josh Cox who won the A string 100m and 200m.
Bedford’s only other A string winner was Josh Lunn who won the 3000m steeplechase, ably backed up by Craig Emmerson whose second place in the B string made the steeplechase Bedford’s strongest event of the day.
PBs went to Tunde Adewale in the 200m, 16-year-old Matt Birchall in the 800m, Craig Emmerson in the steeplechase, Jack Douglas and Colin Maher in the 5000m and Robson Angell in the javelin.
Second place in the A string high jump for Scott Johnson (2.05m) was one of the other outstanding performances, along with 150m runners Ben Alcock and John Eves who were third A string and second B string in 3:55.91 and 3:56.78, respectively.
The final match of the series is at Yeovil on Saturday, August 8.
