Bedford Ladies scraped to a 2-1 win at East Women’s Hockey League Premier Division basement side Wapping on Saturday with a far from vintage performance.

The visitors had expectations of boosting their goal difference and created a number of early chances, most for Kate Costin, but poor decision-making meant they were unconverted.

Bedford did finally break the deadlock when captain Sherri Skene found Costin in the circle and she fired home a reverse stick shot.

Andrea Mason and Kelly Bingham also had chances to extend the lead but the Wapping keeper was equal to the task before two Yvette Van Yperen short corners were struck narrowly wide.

The hosts pressed higher as the half continued, forcing their opponents into a number of mistakes, but in the second period, Bedford attacked with renewed determination as Costin intercepted a pass and fed Laura Weaver who notched her first of the season.

Far from giving Bedford the confidence to search for more goals, it was Wapping who looked the stronger as they forced Bex Howitt into a number of saves.

Rachel Jackson impressed in the visitors’ defence, before Wapping pulled one back from a penalty corner with 15 minutes remaining.

In a nervy finale, Bedford wasted a host of opportunities and then had to absorb some Wapping pressure, with Harri Kinnear, SJ Darrington and Skene making some last-ditch blocks.

This weekend, Bedford are at home to Upminster in the league before their last 16 Investec Cup tie against Wimbledon on Sunday.
