Swimmers shine at Dunstable gala
Luton Swimming Club claimed the Gareth Jeans Trophy at a gala hosted by local rivals Dunstable.
In a close-fought affair Luton won out with 229 points, but they were pushed all the way by Flitwick with 215 points and Dunstable 211 points.
The bedrock of the team's success was a fine series of relay swims that saw the 11/U boys and girls sweep all before them in both the freestyle and medley events – a feat also matched by the 13/U girls.
Rounding off a very strong female effort both the 15/U and Open age group girls quartets each won their medley races.
Nicola Jesson, 13/U, bagged a brace of individual wins in the 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke, as did Zoe Smith in the Open age group, winning both the 100m breaststroke and 50m butterfly.
The 11/U girls had a strong showing with individual wins for Jessica Butcher and Jamie Wright in the 50m backstroke, Rachel Templeman in the 50m freestyle and Abby Gee in the 50m butterfly. In the 15/U section Laura Smith triumphed in the 50m butterfly and Hannah Parr in the 50m breaststroke. The team capped off their night's work by winning the mixed eight-member freestyle squadron relay.
Meanwhile, the club's younger swimmers commenced their campaigns in the 2009 Milton Keynes & District Junior League. Both teams had tough away draws but the young swimmers battled gamely. For the A team, George Rodger, 10/U, won the breaststroke and Beth Currant, 12/U, the backstroke.
Butcher, 11/U, produced some strong performances for the B team, winning both the backstroke and butterfly before joining team-mates Lauren Bajak, Emma Jesson and Rachel Sayer to win the medley relay.
Lucy Gee, 9/U, also got in on act, coming first in the butterfly.
Overall both teams finished fifth and the swimmers will shortly be in second round action.
