Luton blunt Wrexham's edge

Red Dragons limited as Town pile on the pressure in fine first half show

Wrexham manager Dean Saunders was forced to admit that his Red Dragons' fire had largely been quenched by the Hatters in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Kenilworth Road.

The former Wales international also conceded that Luton had been the far better side in the first half, but felt they were much improved after the break.

He said: "The chances we had were not as many as we normally would. Andrew Fleming hit a lovely one but unfortunately it hasn't gone in.

"First half I thought we were under a bit of pressure. They pinned us back, got some crosses in and looked a bit sharper than us to the ball.

"Since I've been at the club that's the most pressure anyone has had on us really.

"Second half I thought we pummelled them for long periods but we just couldn't get the goal.

"I thought the referee could have given a penalty as well when Lamine Sakho has crossed the ball in and their boy has handballed it.

"I brought Sakho on and he showed a lot of class when he come on.

"A least we didn't go home with a whimper. We were piling on the pressure at the end."

And while he admitted it's probably too late for Wrexham to be challenging for a play-off spot, it looks like Luton have all but cemented their place.

He added: "They are obviously trying to get in the play-off spots with the chance of slipping in somewhere else.

"They are a good team. They are up there and have a lot of good players who have played in the League.

"We are struggling to scrape in there. The damage was done probably in the middle of the season.

"The odds are stacked against us now. You wouldn't have a bet, even if you were allowed!"
