Gregor Gillanders admitted the Blues were beaten by the better side when they lost 23-13 at Bristol on Sunday, writes Michale Hann.

In treacherous conditions Bedford started the game in a positive fashion and were on course to claim another victory when they led 10-6 at half time.

However, Bristol were ruthless in the second period and the Blues had no response to the home side’s two second half tries.

Speaking after the game the Blues flanker said: “We talked to Mike (Rayer) afterwards and he said it was key moments that cost us.

“There were little things, we were dropping the ball along the floor and when we were going to deck the ball was squirting out.

“The lineout wasn’t up to scratch today, so we weren’t getting our usual supply of ball.

“It was those little mistakes that cost us and to be fair a better side probably beat us today.

“The annoying thing for us is that we didn’t come out with a losing bonus point but that happens.”

Gillanders put in a combative performance and was the standout performer in the Blues’ ranks, however he still felt he could have done better in certain areas.

He continued: “A big part of my game is the lineout and I didn’t function at all well today – which doesn’t give us the supply of ball that we play off.

“But I enjoy playing and everybody knows the troubles I had last year and it is just nice to get a run of games.”

Despite the result the Blues have started the season in tremendous fashion and Gillanders says there is plenty to be positive about ahead of their encounter with Newcastle Falcons next weekend.

He added: “We still have a good record and the good thing is there is a short turn-around.

“Technically this was the biggest game of the season so far and we will have the same again next week.

“It is at home which is good, and they (Newcastle) are a big team.

“We will switch on and do our homework – but maybe there is that little extra adrenaline next week because of who it is.”
