Huge success for Bedford Judo Club
The last few months have proved to be one of the most successful periods for members of Bedford Judo Club. Five members were selected to represent England at the Commonwealth Masters Judo championships held in Cardiff at the end of January and all performed superbly.
Fred Itoise won silver in the O100kg category, Steve Cowley claimed bronze in the U71kg section, Carl Hunt won bronze in the U81kg category and Richard Hobbs also took bronze in the U100kg section.
Meanwhile, Matthew Dobson gained his first dan (black belt) in Reading and Dave Franklin and 16-year-old Michal Kozlowski gained their black belts at the Thetford grading last week.
Kozlowski is the youngest member of the club ever to receive his black belt, and all three won five contests to gain their grade in a line-up on the day.
Adam Dodd, 15, was selected to represent Bedford at the British closed championships and was competing against players who were looking for a place in this year’s Olympics. Dodd fought well and was unlucky not to reach the podium.
In the junior section, Ellis Kane won the Bedford Judo Club Player Of The Year, Oliver Lombardi came second and joint third place was given to Emma Loeffler and Duarte Faria. The trophies were awarded by former Great Britain international and World Masters champion Debbie Stowell, who started her judo career at Bedford Judo Club.
Itoise will be representing the British Police team in a match against the Dutch Police at the end of March 2012.
The club trains Monday or Thursday at Abbey Middle School, Elstow, and for more information visit www.bedfordjudouk.webs.com.
