Four wins in a row for Bedford HC ladies
Bedford HC. wk 04.
Bedford made it four East Women’s Hockey League Premier Division victories on the bounce with a 2-1 success over second-placed Canterbury at Chester Road on Saturday.
Katherine Winger returned to the side in place of Jenna Maclaren as the hosts looked strong defensively with Elli Priston making some fine interceptions.
Bedford were the dominant force though as Kate Costin put Kelly Bingham through, only for the keeper to make a good save, before it was 1-0 when Yvette Van Yperen dodged around two defenders and arrowed a brilliant shot into the corner.
The hosts tried to push on with Fran Lee and Sherri Skene the architects of much of their play, but they couldn’t add to the lead at the half time break.
In the second period, Connie Mason had a shot cleared off the line early on, while Canterbury were reduced to 10 players for 10 minutes after a heavy-handed foul on player of the match Priston.
Bedford continued to enjoy the lion’s share of possession with Costin, Mason, Becky Childs and Skene all denied by the visitors’ in-form keeper.
Midway through the half, the home team had the second goal cushion as Childs coolly converted from the spot after Natalia Norford was taken out by the goalkeeper.
With 10 minutes remaining, Canterbury gave themselves a glimmer of hope as they made the scores 2-1, but good defending from Sarah Walsh and SJ Darrington enabled Bedford to hold on, and now trail their opponents by just two points.
This weekend, Bedford travel to Colchester.
