Former bowls world champion at Henlow

Tony Alcock Friends of Bowls England lost to Beds

Henlow Park Bowls Club was delighted to host the Friends of Bowls England in a match last week when bowlers came from all over the country to take part.

One of the first to arrive and Chief Executive of Bowls England was former World Champion Tony Alcock MBE.

They were at Henlow to play Bedfordshire men led by Country President Derek Bird.

Friends of Bowls England was started in 2005 to provide funding for the sport of Bowls in the form of sponsorship and donations. Initially it was mainly for the Men's game, but now with unification in 2008 it covers the Ladies as well.

The Friends of Bowls England arrived in bright sunshine and enjoyed a buffet lunch provided by Kath and her merry band of helpers.

After a game which resulted unfortunately in a loss for the Friends of Bowls England, both they and the Bedfordshire team adjourned to the club house were they proceeded to demolish more food. Whoever said that your appetite lessens as you get older obviously wasn't a bowler.

After a few words about Friends of Bowls England to those assembled, Tony Alcock handed out some gifts to his top rink, followed by Derek Bird the Bedfordshire County President who done the same.

Tony's top rink was Barry Armstrong, Jim Baird, Ron Sing and Gordon Black while he also presented gifts to Kath and her now slightly jaded band of helpers.

More speeches and a joke from Henlow Park's President Bob Gray finished off proceedings leaving only Kath and her rapidly flagging band of helpers to clear up.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, they came, they played, some conquered, some didn't, but that didn't matter, they all left in good spirit after a good days bowling already looking forward to the next game.
