Weekend wins for Rovers, Blue Cross, Ampthill and Cranfield
Ampthill Town returned to league business after two cup ties brought different fortunes, and won 2-0 at bottom club Sun Postal Sports on Saturday.
Town chalked up their 11th league away in but the winning margin should and could have been greater had Ampthill been sharper and more clinical up front.
With one or two injuries – and perhaps an eye on two important games in a week – changes were made, but Ampthill did enough to dispose of a poor Sun Postals side.
Town perhaps began too casually and took a while to settle before Tyrone Taylor clipped home a shot when a corner was not cleared.
Ampthill had further openings but could not mke them count while the hosts almost took advantage of some sloppiness in Town’s ranks.
Taylor added a headed second just before half time to put Ampthill in command but if that was the signal for more goals, the invitation wasn’t taken.
Kyle Durcan should have done better after a good run and later Nicholls hit the woodwork and saw another chance saved while Durcan again and Coulter should have added more goals.
Town completed the double over the basement side with ease and they will face much stiffer challenges in their next two games.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) they host league leaders London Colney at 7.45pm and then visit Caldecote in the Beds FA Senior Trophy semi-final on Saturday. That game now kicks off at 2pm.
Cranfield United avenged an early season 3-2 defeat at Forde Park as they beat Division One county rivals Langford 4-3 at Crawley Road on Saturday.
United were 2-0 up after 23 minutes with Enzo Carillo opening their acount after just three minutes while a trip inside the area on Neil Lewis allowed Max Risby to convert the resultant spot kick.
But the Reds were allowed to hit back with two goals in a minutes just before the break courtesy of James Peters whose second was a cracker after racing in from the wide left.
But two minutes into the new half Nat Peacock restored Cranfield’s advantage to 3-2 and when he scored a fourth after Langford had had Ashley Fitton sent off following a two-footed challenge, Paul Garrett headed in the Reds third for 4-3 to set up a grandstand finish.
Elsewhere in Division One, Bedford went down 3-2 at home to Hoddesdon Town who were 2-0 up at the break through Jamie Brandon and Gary Simmonds.
But Luigi Rocco pulled one back before Simmonds made it 3-1, Alex Taylor then setting up a close finish with Bedford’s second tewn minutes from time.
In the United Counties League’s Premier Division, AFC Kempston Rovers were 4-2 home winners against Spalding United whose new manager Pat Rayment is still waiting for his first points after recently taking over.
The Walnut Boys’ striker Ash Farmer bagged the opener after 12 minutes while Phil Draycott doubled their advantage two minutes into the new half.
Farmer went on to complete a hat-trick following further goals in the 65th and 71st minutes while the Tulips replied with two late goal from Ryan O’Loughlin ten minutes from time and Danny French cutting the deficit to 4-2 just before the final whistle.
And turning to UCL Division One, Wootton enjoyed their biggest win of the season at the expense of basement side Rothwell Town.
The beleagured Bones had no answer as Blue Cross ran in six goals after Jack Hoogstraten opened their account after just five minutes.
However Wootton had to wait until the 44th minute to extend their lead courtesy of Marc Umney.
Jason Simons scored the third goal on the hour but Rothwell cut the deficit ten minutes later through Garry Chambers.
But Matt Kent restored Wootton’s three-goal margin 15 minutes from time while late goals from Umney and Charlie Standish in the dying seconds made it 6-1.
