Heartbreak as Eagles denied
Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division Eagles 2 Leamington 2
With the temperature peaking at 35 degrees inside the Eyrie on Saturday afternoon, the heartbreak of the opening day game continued for a 13th season after the Eagles nearly broke the hoodoo to record a win over Leamington, writes Roger Worsley.
Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, as a wildly deflected free kick from Liam Daly with two minutes remaining denied Bedford in their first Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division encounter of the new campaign.
Bedford took the lead just 40 seconds before the break through a James Mace own goal. Leamington equalised two minutes into the second half; Tom Berwick lashing the ball home from 10 yards.
Eagles regained the lead on the hour through new striker Nick Beasant, but Daly’s effort in the 88th minute meant that both sides shared the spoils.
