Ampthill return to league action but drop a point
Ampthill Town returned to league action after weeks of cup exploits but dropped two home points to Hoddesdon who got a late equaliser in a ding dong affair.
After their win over Harpenden in midweek it was Hoddesdon who began the livelier side and Town were forced to defend and were pegged back in their own half in the opening exchanges.
Town were finding life difficult again with front duo McKenzie and Lester, but when it looked as though they had got the better of Hoddesdon’s early onslaught Town were caught napping at the back and the visitors went ahead when Andreos put Hoddesdon ahead from close range.
But Ampthill began to carve out one or two openings before the interval and should have made more of the chances. Yet Ampthill were quick off the mark in the second period and Danny Collins levelled after a good piece of footwork. Robbie Goodman fired in the secon before Hoddesdon rallied to level but when Lea Coulter put Town 3-2 up Town looked to be in command.
They were having the better of the possession and handling the away attacks well.
However in the dying minutes Hoddesdon pushed up and when keeper Jamie Bewick missed his punch , Andreos was on hand to level for the visitors and deny Town their win.
Ampthill Town’s next match is away to New Bradwell St Peters on Tuesday December 27 at 3pm.
Bedford’s weekend trip to play Buckingham Athletic was postponed but they are in action on Tuesday, December 27 when they host Langford at 3pm.
Cranfield United lost 3-1 at home to London Lions although newcomer Joel McCormick scored on his debut after they had slipped 2-0 down. Cranfield’s Paul Cooper gave the visitors a fifth minute lead when he put through his own goal while Lions’ David Soutar made it two on 15 minutes before McCormick pulled one back six minutes later.
But after Andy Glynne restored the Lions’ two goal advantage in the 36th minute, there were no more goals.
At Kingsthorpe Mill in the UCL’s Premier Division on Saturday, hosts Northampton Spencer salvaged a point with a late leveller against AFC Kempston Rovers.
Darren Frost’s third minute goal had the Millers ahead at half time and when he scored his second goal after 58 minutes, Spencer seemed set for a first win in seven games.
But the Walnut Boys turned the game around with three goals in 16 minutes after Danny Watson started the fightback to take his season’s goal total to 21 with goals after 70 and 82 minutes.
And with four minutes left, Sam Macrae’s goal looked like taking the points back to Kempston before Joe Power rescued the home side with an 88th minute point saver for 3-3.
Kempston are away to Newport Pagnell Town on Boxing Day in a 3pm kick-off.
In UCL Division One, Wootton Blue Cross hosted Burton Park Wanderers at Weston Park, the visitors leaving without a win in seven games although the 1-1 draw gave them a useful point against their in-form hosts.
The visitors took a 32nd minute lead through Jack Wisniewski but Jack Hoogstraten’s reply 20 minutes from time earned Blue Cross their point.
Wootton travel to play Potton United on Tuesday, December 27 for a 3pm kick-off.
