The Eagles produced a blinding display of football as they dispatched Leighton Town 5-0 in the Beds Senior Cup at the Eyrie on Tuesday evening.

The Eagles produced the opening goal in the seventh minute when Bilal Yafai latched onto a long ball and skipped his way into the Leighton area to slot the ball past Aaron Bufton.

Seven minutes later and the lead was doubled as Yafai’s venomous, right wing cross was directed into his own net by Leighton’s Jason Castello.

It became three with just 18 minutes on the clock as Javia Roberts dispossessed a Leighton player 30 yards out, went on a run to the edge of the area, and struck a low shot past Bufton.

Bedford posted a fourth goal with 25 minutes gone, when Roberts’ left wing cross was taken and directed into the net by Christian Lester.

Early in the second half, Nat Lewars spurned a glorious chance to add to the tally when his run into the area, and subsequent rounding of Bufton, left him with an empty goal.

However, a debut goal was not to be at this time, as his shot rebounded off the post. Roberts picked up the rebound, but with the defence recovered, hit his shot wide.

Bedford went close later on when Jack Jones’ header fwas headed off the line by Aaron McKee. A couple of minutes later, Roberts had two shots cleared off the line.

Bedford’s fifth goal came on the hour mark as the home midfield, marshalled by the impressive Yafai, kept the pressure on their visitors. Lewars made up for his previous error by hitting the target from the edge of the area.

Roberts lost out on a 1-on-1 with Bufton, then with 11 minutes left Lewars’ shot was saved, and in trying to keep the ball on the offensive, Jones was upended in the area. Kyal McNulty took the resulting penalty, but blazed his spot kick over the bar.

Bedford kept up the pressure until the final whistle, but were unable to find the back of the net again, and the game ended 5-0.

Bedford are back in league action on Saturday, hosting Uxbridge at the Eyrie. 3pm kick-off.
