Hatters snap up Minstermen midfielder on loan

Hatters have announced the loan signing of York City midfielder Jonathan Smith on loan until January 5.

The 26-year-old has played 13 times for the Minstermen this season, after rejoining the club from Swindon Town in the summer.

Smith, who started his career at Morecambe, featured 48 times for the Robins last campaign, as they won promotion to League One, scoring three goals in the process.

Town boss Paul Buckle told the club’s official website: “Jonathan was a player I tried to sign in the summer.

“He played a major part in winning the title at Swindon so he gives us another winner in the squad.

“He was keen to stay in the Football League and we understood that but, I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to get him now.

“He joins at a time when the pitches are getting heavier and he’ll give us that extra in centre of midfield.

“He played a disciplined role in midfield for Swindon last season in a deeper position where he was responsible for breaking up play and protecting the back defence, but he still popped up with three terrific goals.

“Jonathan’s arrival is a massive boost to us at a time when injuries and suspensions will crop up at an important segment of the season in the run up to Christmas and the New Year.”

Smith will wear squad number 24 and goes straight into the Town squad that travels to Edgar Street tomorrow night.
