A single goal three minutes from time consigned Bedford Town to defeat on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten 1-0 at Potters Bar Town.
Jon Taylor’s side included two new signings, with Hitchin Town loanee Will Wright, and James Hillsdon – recently brought in from neighbours Bedford FC – both starting.
With Storm Desmond at their backs, Potters Bar took the game to Bedford from the start and Eagles keeper Maxime Fondop Siwe was forced to palm away a wind assisted shot from Dave Lawrence.
On 15 minutes the Eagles were denied the lead by the woodwork. Josh Bamford’s cross from the right went to the far post for Christian Lester to head back into the danger area, and Wright’s shot cannoned off the bar and to safety.
A minute later, Chris Doyle beat the onrushing Fondop Siwe, but saw his effort cleared off the line by James Peters.
Potters Bar had the ball in the net on 27 minutes, when Luke Warner-Eley fired past Fondop-Siwe, but the assistant raised an offside flag.
Bedford needed to use the wind as Potters Bar did in the first half, but they struggled with the strength of it.
The Eagles didn’t get too many chances, but wasted one when James Hillsdon was given space on the edge of the area and hit a tame shot.
At the other end, Fondop Siwe was easily winning the man of the match award with another stunning save, as he dropped to the foot of the post to deny Joe Bennett.
The last few minutes, however, were not to be fondly remembered by Bedford at all. On 84 minutes, Ashley Nathaniel-George fell under a challenge from Tommy Hull who was shown a straight red card.
Taylor was subsequently sent from the dugout, and with both manager and captain out of the match, the free-kick was taken and Lawrence swept the ball home for the win.
