There was extra-time heartbreak for Bedford Town as they went out of the FA Trophy 3-2 to Weston Super Mare in Tuesday night’s replay.

The Eagles did themselves proud against their Conference South opponents – holding them for two matches before finally succumbing to a narrow defeat.

It looked as though Bedford were going to cause an upset when they took the lead in the 82nd minute as Josh Winters passed left to Greg Ling, who looked up and sublimely beat Luke Purnell in the Weston goal.

However, with time running out, the hosts hit back in the second minute of stoppage time when Syd Camper fired home to send the tie into extra-time.

There were no further goals in the first period of extra-time, but it was Weston who took control after the interval.

With 110 minutes on the clock, Dayle Grubb received the ball in the Bedford area and slotted past Garry Malone to put the home side 2-1 ahead.

And just five minutes later, they doubled their advantage when Jake Mawford went down in the box following a challenge from Paul Cooper.

The referee pointed to the spot and Grubb stepped up to dispatch the resulting penalty to put his side within touching distance of the first round proper of the competition.

Bedford gave themselves hope with an 118th minute near post header from Ollie Wilkinson, but Weston held on to send the brave Eagles home empty-handed.
