Bedford Town suffered their first defeat of the new season as they went down 2-1 at Godalming Town on Saturday.

Godalming dictated the pace of the game in the early exchanges, but were mostly contained by the Eagles defence.

Despite the slow start and the team not having a proper warm-up due to the late arrival of the coach, it was Bedford who took the lead.

A corner was headed back into the danger area by Christian Lester, and Joel Norris took advantage by making sure with his own header to plant the ball firmly in the back of the net from close range.

The lead did not last long, though, as Godalming equalised seven minutes later when Will Hutton fell under a challenge on the edge of the area. Darren Wheeler stepped up and placed the resulting free-kick into the top right hand corner of the goal.

The pattern of play in the second half never wavered; Hutton was involved early on as his header went over the bar from Wheeler’s cross.

Godalming were threatening, and in the 56th minute, they took the lead. A corner from the left wasn’t defended properly by the Bedford defence, and Tom Willment stooped to head the ball past Dillon Barnes.

Russell Bull and Josh Bamford were sent on with a few minutes left, to try and bring some fresh legs to the attack, but the Godalming defence were on song in containing any attack.

Just before full time, Lester’s looping header found the target, but Richard Ossai managed to find a bit more stretch to tip the ball over the bar.
