Bedford FC got off to a disappointing start with losses in both the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round and their first game of the league campaign.
On Saturday they entertained Welwyn Garden City from the SSML Premier at home in the FA Cup.
The game was very direct during the first 20 minutes with The Citizens having the clearer chances and missing three opportunities early on.
Bedford’s first real chance of the half came after a strong run from Tyrone Kelly but the shot was wide of the mark which left both teams going in at half time 0-0.
After the break Bedford came out stronger taking the lead on the hour when Sam Smith broke in to the box and poked the ball through both defender’s and keeper’s legs.
The lead didn’t last long though when City scored just two minutes later through an unchallenged header finding the back of the net.
Welwyn got what proved to be the winner from the penalty spot 20 minutes from time through Josh Bronti. Although keeper Hudson guessed the right way there was little he could do to keep the ball out.
Bedford upped the intensity for the remainder of the game and went close on several occasions but just couldn’t find the final touch in front of goal. An impressive display though by Bedford against a team hotly tipped to win the SSML Premier next season.

On Tuesday night Bedford went down 2-0 on their travels away to Baldock Town at Stofold’s Roker Park.
A physical game brought a similar outcome in that Bedford conceded from two set pieces, a corner and a penalty both struck in the first half.
It could have been more but for some fantastic work between the sticks from young Michael Hudson who worked hard to deny The Reds further.
Bedford made two changes at the break and came out looking more spirited. The introduction of Tyrone Kelly half way through the half turned the game with him getting in behind The Reds defence time and time again and only a lack of final finish letting them down.
Bedford go again on Saturday in the league with an away fixture at Risborough Rangers.
