Ampthill Town begin the new season on Saturday aiming to improve on their 14th place finish in the previous campaign – their second in SSML Division One.

However they will have to raise their game after some mixed results in their pre season games.

Town won their first game 5-1 away at Tring Town but since then they have slid to three defeats.

Losses at Cogenhoe and Loughton Manor were followed last Saturday by a 4-2 defeat at home by Crawley Green on Saturday.

The newly promoted visitors went into a three goal lead by half time although Town had plenty of the play and chances fell to Bradley Clarke.

An own goal saw Town reduce the arrears. Crawley added a fourth before Jamie Cerminara headed home Town’s second from a Joe McCabe cross.

Town are on their travels at the start of the season with three away games.

They visit Hatfield Town on Saturday followed by a trip to Winslow next Tuesday before going to Hillingdon on Saturday week.

All three of their hosts finished below Town last season and they will be keen to pick up some points from their opening games before their first home game against Broadfields.

The club have lost some players in the summer to other teams and commitments but have picked up some local recruits who will create competition in the squad.

There are some strong outfits in the division and Town will be looking for a solid start to their new term.
